Become a Trustee

We're looking for an awesome new external Trustee to join us on our exciting journey at UCB Guild of Students.

Three years ago, the Guild became an independent Charity. Since then, we've been on a pretty big ride!

We've grown. From a brilliant determined officer who could see the potential the Guild could be for students, to a professional staff team that drive the Guild's work forward from our Annual Plan, a dynamic Executive Team that lead the way, and some very handsome offices in the University's brand new Moss House building. All of this is stewarded by our values-driven, student centred Trustee Board. They have been key to the development of the Guild and with us from the very beginning, from society members all the way through to founding Trustees.

We're now looking forward to a bright future.

We have a brand new student space opening in September 2021, and we're in the process of agreeing an exciting relationship agreement with our parent institution, University College Birmingham. This will pave the way for the growth and development of the Guild, building on our excellent student voice work.

Next year, we'll be launching a major piece of work to create the foundations of a long term Strategic Plan, starting with a Liberation, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy that will genuinely be the beating heart of everything that we do.

We are looking for an external Trustee to join us on this journey and be part of our Guild family.

Who are we looking for?

  • You're passionate about our students, and our city (or you could be!) We're an institution full of creators. We bake cakes and we build businesses, we're make up artists and we're mixologists. Like the Jewellery Quarter where we're rooted, we take the raw materials of our city and turn them into precious goods. We're invested in Birmingham, making it a great place to live, work and study - and just like our city, we keep looking Forward.

  • Values are everything We're by the students and for the students. You need to be too. We're looking for someone who relishes getting stuck in with a mixed board of wise owls and driven dynamic students. You'll want to enjoy working together to know exactly what it is the Guild does better than anyone else, and make us brilliant at it.

  • You have an experience to bring that adds something new, extra or different, but we're open to what that could be... Between our existing Trustees, and our staff knowledge, we have a broad range of areas covered by our Board. We're looking for someone who can compliment the existing Trustees but hopefully bring something unique, which doesn't have to mean from their professional work experience.

  • You have an absolute commitment to building a better more equal society Creating an equal and just society is at the very heart of everything our officers want the Guild to do and be, and they are not daunted at the significant challenge this brings. The Guild has a crucial role to play working with UCB in its ambition to create a truly welcoming inclusive institution that serves the fanastic diverse working class city it is built in. We're looking for a Trustee who is inspired and committed to this.

What's in it for you?

  • Our officers are a delight If you want to be blown away every single time you come along for a meeting, pop in to say hello or attend an event, then this is the Trustee Board for you. You will not be short on inspiration! Our student leaders are visionary, demand excellence in everything they do, and are driving real meaningful change in their work every day.

  • You will have the opportunity to shape and steward a growing student-led charity We're a small perfectly formed team with ambitions to grow with our institution. We've come a huge way but we've still got more to go, and there's room to be a big part of that.

  • We're great fun Across the entire team - officer, staff and Trustee - we're a really fun, welcoming and exciting organisation. If you're looking to meet some brilliant people, and enjoy your time in meetings, then we're the Board for you.

  • There's some seriously good food No shop bought buffets for you in our meetings. French pastries baked that morning by our students in practicals? A celebratory dinner in our University's unbelievably good Michelin quality restaurant? You can even follow it by booking in for a professional sports physio session, get a haircut or a salon treatment because our students are practical, vocational and making things happen for their communities.

Ok, you sold me with the cakes, how do I apply?

We're taking applications until midday on 2nd June 2021.
