We're living in unbelievable times. Most of us are stuck in our homes - and that's if we're lucky. Hundreds of you are still having to go out to work in essential industries that UCB students are the lifeblood of. Even at this time of crisis, UCB students are still forging our city and leading the way.

On top of that you have your families to take care of, children to look after and teach, and we're all worrying where the money is coming from to pay the next set of bills.

Once you've stopped worrying about that, you're still having to think about your education!

The Guild is here to support you to make sure you're getting the best out of college or uni, even at this difficult time.

We're here to support you!

Our Campaign Goals

We've spoken with society leaders, course reps and students to find out what matters to you at this time. We've put together 12 key asks and we're asking UCB, the government, accommodation providers and other key decision makers to Support our Students!

Housing and Accommodation

Students in all accommodation - whether student halls, private landlords, living with their family or in their own home - should not be disadvantaged by this crisis.

1. All students in UCB halls should not pay rent from 23rd March – the date lockdown was announced. PARTLY AGREED

2. All students who are currently in halls should get a guarantee that they can stay until this crisis is over AGREED

3. All students should be safe from eviction, and not have to pay rent for accommodation they cannot make use of.

Health, Wellbeing and Safety

Teaching and Assessment

The University should recognise its unique student demographics and variety of vocational courses mean there is not one simple solution to the problem we are currently faced with. Therefore, delivery of teaching in a virtual manner, for a vast part of UCB curriculums is not in the best interests of UCB students.

5. All students should have the right to defer without penalty or impact on their studies. UPDATED

6. All students should be guaranteed the grade they have achieved so far and should not get a lower grade for this semester. UPDATED

7. Students should be able to finish their course if they are able to and UCB should prioritise these students. AGREED

8. Students should be provided with high quality support and guidance to be able to make these decisions effectively.

Student Staff

The University have guaranteed all University employed staff will get furloughed - which means they'll keep their job and get paid a minimum of 80% of their salary while off - if unable to work,  as well as get that paid at 100% of their salary. This should be the same for all students employed by the University too.

9. All student staff should be furloughed and the university should pay 100% of their wages.

Communication

We know no-one knows exactly what's happening in the world - all of us are waiting and no one can say when we'll be back at UCB or things will be back to normal. We would far more appreciate being told we are unsure what is going to happen, than, for example, saying University will start back on 29th April when we know that’s highly unlikely to be the case. We would rather things like graduation are done properly, instead of rushed through online because of the time of year. Everyone deserves a proper celebration.

10. The University should be transparent about the uncertainty of our current situation with students, and give clear and regular up to date information

11. The University should ensure all graduation ceremonies are delayed until such time as they can be fulfilled properly, in person AGREED

Fees and Funding

12. Students should be refunded this semester’s tuition fee by the government. They should be eligible for a further semester’s fee and maintenance support if they choose to defer.
